Christmas balls

Novembre 20, 2014

Vai alla versione in italiano

Mulled wine stalls are open, lights are up,  the Christmas markets open on Saturday and it was 12 degrees until last weekend. Christmas is definitely around the corner!

After more than a week of illness between all the four of us I really wanted something sweet. I needed something with chocolate. And despite the fact that I still couldn’t taste, smell or hear anything just knowing that chocolate was one of the ingredients was good enough. I couldn’t be bothered baking though and to be fair I didn’t even have eggs in the fridge, so cake was not on the menu. Then I happened to find in my “maybe-one-day-to-cook” pile the little Christmas cookies booklet from the course I took a couple of years ago and that  I mentioned in my anzacs post.  I flicked through it and found just the thing: nuts and cocoa balls, the only recipe that doesn’t require eggs or baking in the whole booklet, yay! It was a done deal. Quick, easy, superyummy and healthy too! My little people enjoyed picking them out of a glass jar. I didn’t, my hands don’t fit through.

This is the original recipe from the booklet from Frau Erlacher!

Ingredients

50 gr ground hazelnuts

50 gr ground almonds

1 tbsp desiccated coconut

40 gr butter

3 tbsp honey

2 tbsp sultanas, finely chopped

100 gr oats, the finer sort

1 tbsp rum

2 tbsp cocoa powder

Mix all the dry ingredients in a bowl. Melt the butter and add it along with the honey, sultanas and rum. Make a ball with the mixture and let it sit for twenty minutes or so. Make little balls and roll them in more desiccated coconut.

I used chocolate muesli instead of plain oats because I didn’t have any and water instead of rum. As it doesn’t get cooked through (it doesn’t get cooked at all actually!) it’s definitely not for the little people. Oh, I also used half the amount of honey, the chocolate in the muesli made up for sweetness.

A me no, la mano non mi ci passava!
